Why would a drug rehab center put a 16 year old boy on antidepressants and antipsychotics without?
June 2, 2009 - diagnosing him with depression or any mental disorder, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder? They are administering these drugs to him for aggressiveness and behavioral problems. Since when have antipsychotics been used in adolescents for aggressive behavior? Is this ethical? Is this the 21st century version of electroshock therapy and lobotomy? Why is a drug rehab facility taking someone off of street drugs and putting him on pharmaceutical drugs?
Doctors prescribes antipsychotics to aggressive children and adolescents all the time. It is a common and accepted practice among doctors who treat children. Just because they call them antipsychotics doesn't mean that they are only for psychosis. If it makes you feel any better you can call them neuroleptics. These drugs are not anything like electroshock and lobotomies. For one thing electroshock still goes on all the time and it treats depression. Lobotomies destroy a section of your brain and leaves you devoid of personality and emotions. These drugs that you mentioned are relatively safe and effective, If you don't agree with the course of prescribed treatment and you are a legal guardian you can always get a second opinion.
Using 'legal' drugs, can help get someone off of 'illegal' drugs. Aggressive behavior can be a symptom of depression (such as in Post-traumatic stress). Many times a person will 'self-medicate' with drugs (alcohol, illegal drugs, etc...) in attempts to relieve some inner pain, conflict, anger, clinical depression, symptoms of a condition such as Bipolar disorder,etc... They must feel that he needs help (either long-term or temporary) by being on certain drugs to help him get off of the other drugs he has been taking. At least this way they can monitor what he is taking and in what doses. Who knows what 'cocktail' of drugs he has been taking by himself. Wish him the best.
Because terms such as "Oppositional Defiant Disorder," "Attention Deficit Disorder," "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder" are all contrived, fake mental disorders. Often times those kids could very well be acting like, well, normal and healthy kids and there is no use to diagnose them. You ask a good question and until this very day there has yet to be a single cure for the number of maladies listed listed in the DSM. If you look at the number of mental illnesses or disorders there one can not help but think it is a pseudo-scientific form of witchcraft. That 16-year old boy which you mentioned could be just acting out and living a normal life like a 16-year old boy and there is no need to diagnose him with all those contrived illnesses and force him against his will to go on drugs which he doesn't need. Just release him and let him be free is what I say.
It's very simple, dear. The individuals working in these rehab centers are not going to put forth the effort to give these children counseling. In their eyes, "their problems are beyond resolvable." So, the easy alternative is to sedate them and not deal with them. And yes, this is common nowadays. Even children in Pre-K are being labeled and given anti-depressants because they want to play more than they want to learn. So don't expect any different from a rehab center.
- maybe their trying to ween him off the other drugs.
